That morning started with a simple plan: get breakfast. Just a short 250-meter walk from home to the food stall. I was hoping to eat there, but turns out it was still too early. They don’t serve dine-in until 8 a.m., and I was there well before that. So, breakfast in hand, I walked the same 250 meters back home.
Next on the agenda: a visit to an office building, about 2.3 kilometers away. When I got there, surprise! The document I needed wasn’t there — it was actually at another building that didn’t open until 1 p.m. It was only 10 a.m. at the time, so I figured I’d kill a few hours at the library.
Walked a good 1 km to get there. At the library, I passed the time flipping through Kompas, Pikiran Rakyat, and Tempo. Just the classics.
Finally, it was 1 p.m. I made my way to the second building — another 1.2 km walk. But guess what? The building was closed. Apparently, you need to make an appointment to get in. Of course.
So, back to the first building I went, another 2 km walk, just to ask how to make that magical appointment. And of course — plot twist! The staff told me the second building had just opened, and the staff there had literally just left from the first building. No appointment needed after all, but I had to hurry. The place would close at 3 p.m.
Walked 150 meters to catch an angkot, hopped in, got off near the gate, then walked another 500 meters to the building.
Success. I got the document.
Then came the 3.8 km walkback home.
I thought I was done for the day, but of course, the universe had one more twist in store — a sudden data request I had to send immediately. Walked 950 meters to get it done, then another 950 meters home again.
By this point, it was late afternoon, but I wasn’t ready to end the day just yet. I wanted to catch up with an old friend. So, I walked 2 km to meet them. We shared food, stories, and laughs. Then, finally, one last 2 km walk back home.
Total walking distance that day?
17.35 kilometers.
And honestly? It didn’t feel that exhausting. This city is surprisingly walkable. The sidewalks are wide, shaded by leafy trees, and the air felt just crisp enough to keep me going.
My feet might be a little sore, but my spirit feels light.
